Hitachi Coil Info

Tuning and Usage Notes

  • Tuning is required when using the Hitachi (GT-R) coils.
  • We recommend applying dielectric grease when installing your COP system to minimize the risk of corrosion in the springs.
  • For optimal performance, we suggest setting the factory dwell time to 3.4ms @ 14V to help keep the coils cool. Hitachi coils can support up to 4.5ms, allowing for a larger spark plug gap that improves combustion efficiency and can support even greater horsepower.
  • For reference, a 3.0ms @ 14V dwell time has successfully supported 870whp on a Mustang dyno. However, exceeding 5.5ms @ 14V may oversaturate the coils, leading to premature failure.
  • For high-power builds, a .014 - .018 spark plug gap may be sufficient, but the ideal setting will vary based on your specific vehicle setup.
  • We suggest trusting a reputable tuner to set up your Hitachi coil system for the best performance and lifespan.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

Is the JDC COP Ignition System compatible with my Mitsubishi Evolution model?

Yes, the JDC COP Ignition System is designed as a direct replacement for factory ignition systems in Mitsubishi Evolution models 4 through 9. It seamlessly integrates with your vehicle's existing setup, providing a plug-and-play solution without the need for additional modifications.

Will I need to retune my vehicle after installing the JDC COP Ignition System?

For Denso coils- No retuning is necessary after installation. The JDC COP Ignition System is engineered to work with your vehicle's existing settings, providing immediate performance benefits without the need for additional tuning.

For Hitachi (GT-R) coils - Yes, you will need a tuner to adjust the factory dwell timing before driving with the system installed. We suggest setting the factory dwell time at 3.4ms @14v to help keep the coils cool, but you should always consult with your tuner to ensure the COP system is properly adjusted for your specific setup.

What coils should I choose for my power level?

JDC offers two types of coils for its Coil-On-Plug (COP) Ignition SystemsDenso and Hitachi GT-R coils. Both options have unique characteristics that cater to different performance needs.

Denso Coils (Standard Option)

  • Authentic Japanese-Made Denso Coils – Reliable and proven for high-performance applications.
  • Tested up to 913 WHP @ 0.020" spark plug gap – Well-suited for most moderate to high-power Evo builds.
  • Durable & Long-Lasting – More resistant to breakdown compared to cheaper, off-brand coils.
  • OEM-Level Fitment – Direct plug-and-play for Mitsubishi Evolution 4-9.
  • Recommended for stock cars up to ~900 WHP

Hitachi GT-R Coils (Optional Upgrade)

  • Higher Saturation Limit – Can handle more dwell time without overheating, making them better for extreme horsepower builds.
  • Supports Larger Spark Plug Gaps – More efficient combustion, allowing for more boost and power potential.
  • Improved Ignition Efficiency – Helps in maintaining spark energy under high-cylinder pressures.
  • Recommended for builds exceeding 800+ WHP or aggressive setups requiring more spark energy.

The JDC Recommendation

  • While the Hitachi coils provide more spark energy for higher horsepower builds, they do tend to be more temperamental and require more maintenance and tuning than Denso coils. We do not recommend using HItachi coils for cars making less than 800 WHP. Denso coils are more reliable and less temperamental making them a better-suited option for cars making under 900 WHP.
Why are the Hideaway Harness & Show Series mounting plates not available with Hitachi coils?

Show Series Mounting Plate

  • The Show Series mounting plate features a CNC-machined recess designed to perfectly accommodate the bottom of Denso coils, ensuring the outer flange sits flush with the plate for a seamless fit. However, since Hitachi coils have a different base design, there is currently no Show Series mounting plate available for Hitachi coils.

Hideaway Harness

  • The Hideaway Harness is designed to route beneath the mounting plate, concealing the wires for a clean, wire-tucked look. In the past, when we offered the Hideaway Harness with Hitachi coils, some customers experienced misfire issues with the far-right coil due to the added spacing between the coil and spark plug. To ensure the best reliability and performance for our customers, we made the decision to remove the Hideaway Harness option from kits using Hitachi coils, prioritizing both a smooth-running ignition system and customer satisfaction.
Should I Choose New Or Refurbished Denso Coils?

New Denso Coils

  • Brand-New, Never Used – These coils come directly from the Denso in factory condition.
  • Maximum Longevity & Reliability – Since they are new, they have zero wear and tear, ensuring optimal performance and lifespan.
  • Ideal for High-Performance Builds – If you want the best possible ignition performance with no prior use, new coils are the way to go.
  • 3-Year Warranty- While it is very rare for a new Denso coil to fail under normal conditions, a 3-year warranty assures peace of mind during the warranty period.

Refurbished Denso Coils

  • Authentic Denso Coils That Have Been Professionally Restored – These are genuine, Denso coils that have been tested and refurbished to meet strict high-performance standards. Each coil undergoes a comprehensive inspection to ensure there are no cracks or defects on the stem, and the rubber boot and water seal are replaced for optimal durability. Finally, the coils are ultrasonically cleaned, restoring their appearance and functionality to like-new condition.
  • Cost-Effective Option – Since they have been previously used, they come at a lower price point while still offering great reliability.
  • Same Performance, Lower Price – Functionally identical to new coils, making them an excellent choice for budget-conscious enthusiasts.
  • 2-Year Warranty – All refurbished Denso coils come with a warranty for peace of mind.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • If you want brand-new, untouched components with the longest possible lifespan, go with new Denso coils.
  • If you're looking for a reliable, more affordable alternative with identical performance, refurbished Denso coils are a great option.

Regardless of your choice, both new and refurbished Denso coils provide strong, consistent spark energy, making them a trusted option for your Evo 4-9 ignition system. Rest assured- if you do experience a coil failure during or after the warranty period, JDC is here to help! We stand behind our products and always take care of our customers to the best of our ability.

How Do I Keep My Titanium Products Looking Brand New?

Installing: Wear gloves when installing titanium parts to prevent oils from your hands causing a "faded" look. After installation, clean the part before applying heat to avoid baking oils onto the surface.

Cleaning: Use our JDC Titanium Cleaner, designed to safely clean titanium without damaging the finish. Alternatively, clean with soapy water, a microfiber towel, or Windex, rubbing alcohol, or Clorox wipes.

Avoid: Harsh chemicals like water spot remover, engine degreaser, brake cleaner, metal polish, or acidic cleaners—they can damage the oxidized layer and remove the color.

Tip: Always clean when parts are cool to avoid water spots or tarnished finishes.

What's the difference between kits made for Evo 4-8 & Evo 9?
  • The only difference between kits for Evo 4-8 & Evo 9 is the mounting plate. The Evo 9 has a MIVEC valve cover requiring a slightly different mounting plate. Everything else is exactly the same.
  • Evo 9 kits will work on an Evo 4-8 motor, but there will be some extra cuts in the mounting plate resulting in a less clean look.
  • Evo 4-8 kits will not work on an Evo 9 valve cover.
