The Short Answer: Not Really
We’ve all been there, you buy a new car and want to start modifying it. One of the first places people tend to start is with exhaust modifications, with muffler deletes being an easy cheap and common way to get a little more power and a bit more exhaust tone without purchasing a full exhaust setup.

So Does A Muffler Delete Actually Add Power?
A muffler delete can add a tiny bit of horsepower, but in most cases the gain is so small you’ll never actually feel it from the driver’s seat.
What’s really happening is pretty simple. A muffler is designed to reduce sound by disrupting and slowing exhaust flow. When you remove it, exhaust gases can move slightly more freely through the system, which may reduce a small amount of backpressure and improve flow marginally.
The problem is that modern factory exhaust systems are already fairly efficient. On most vehicles, the muffler usually isn’t the biggest restriction in the system to begin with. That means removing it rarely creates a meaningful performance improvement on its own.
In the real world, most cars only see somewhere around 0 to 5 horsepower from a muffler delete, and many won’t show any measurable gain at all. What you will notice immediately is the increase in exhaust volume, tone, drone, and overall aggressiveness.
What you will notice:
- Much louder exhaust
- More aggressive tone (sometimes raspy depending on the setup)
- Possible drone at certain RPMs
- Less refined overall sound
When It Actually Makes a Difference
A muffler delete starts to matter a little more once the rest of the exhaust system also starts becoming a restriction.
This is especially true on turbocharged cars, where improving exhaust flow after the turbo can help the turbocharger operate more efficiently by reducing pressure throughout the system. In some cases, that can slightly improve spool characteristics or make the car feel a bit more responsive.
Even then, though, the muffler itself usually isn’t the biggest bottleneck in the exhaust setup.
The larger restrictions are typically things like factory catalytic converters, smaller diameter piping, crushed or restrictive bends, resonators, and stock downpipes on turbo applications. Those components have a much bigger impact on overall exhaust flow and performance potential.
That’s why a muffler delete by itself rarely creates major horsepower gains. Most of the change comes from the sound, not the actual performance.
Muffler Delete vs Cat Delete
This is where people often confuse the two modifications.
A muffler delete removes the sound suppression portion of the exhaust system, while a catalytic converter delete removes one of the most restrictive emissions components in the entire setup. Because of that, a cat delete generally has a much larger impact on exhaust flow than a muffler delete alone.
Deleting your muffler is mostly about changing the sound of the car. It’s usually inexpensive, simple to do, and rarely requires tuning afterward. The downside is that the actual performance gains are minimal on most setups.
A catalytic converter delete is a much more aggressive modification. By removing a major restriction in the exhaust system, it can produce more noticeable power gains and improve flow significantly, especially on turbocharged applications. The tradeoff is that it also makes the exhaust substantially louder, harsher, and much stronger smelling. In many cases it will trigger a check engine light, require tuning, and create emissions compliance issues since cat deletes are illegal for street use in many areas.
For most modern performance builds, high-flow catalytic converters tend to be the better middle ground. They improve exhaust flow without completely sacrificing drivability, emissions equipment, or overall refinement.
What Actually Adds Noticeable Power?
If your goal is actual performance gains, a full exhaust setup is where things start making a meaningful difference.
A properly designed exhaust system works as a complete package rather than relying on a single modification. That usually means larger diameter piping, upgraded or high-flow downpipes, better flowing catalytic converters, performance resonators, and less restrictive mufflers all working together to improve exhaust flow and overall efficiency.
When those components are combined correctly, the result is more than just additional noise. The engine can move exhaust gases more efficiently, which becomes especially important on turbocharged applications where reducing restriction can directly improve performance potential.
Once tuning is added into the equation, that’s when exhaust upgrades can genuinely start unlocking horsepower gains.
At the end of the day, a muffler delete is mostly a sound modification.
A properly engineered exhaust system is an actual performance modification.
